After 6 months of work, the illustrations for my next children’s picture book, Messy Magic Birthday, are done! Twenty three in all, including the book’s cover, are on their way to the photographer to be transformed into digital images. They do this by either scanning the illustrations directly into a computer or by photographing them with a digital camera and then into a computer. In either case, sometime next week I will have a digital file of the images that are needed to make the book. The next step will be to add the text to the images. (I’m sorry my photo has so much glare.)
For those of you do not know, I have decided to self-publish this book so that I can get it “out there” as soon as possible. This book is dedicated to my two older granddaughters, Cleo and Annabelle, who are now 8 and 7 ½ years old. (Lola, 5 years old, of Lonely Lola Ladybug is granddaughter #3) The older girls are nearing a time when children tend to move away from picture books and towards chapter books. To go with a traditional publisher would mean at least a year’s delay in publishing. That coupled with the fact that most small publishers do very little to market your book and most big publishers are unreachable, I plan to publish Messy Magic Birthday in the first quarter of 2017. So along with writing and illustrating, this year I am going to learn how to publish. Stay tuned for more in the coming year. Thank you to all of you who have encouraged and supported me in the past. In many ways, you help me do creative work! Here’s to a happy New Year!
